Stapleton Hall Road

Stroud Green, London N4

Developer: Solidspace

Architect: StepHen Taylor Architects

About The Development

After long negotiations with Network Rail and the planning officer, consent was finally permitted in January 2011 and the construction commenced in October 2012.

With a joint effort between Solidspace and Stephen Taylor Architects, a pair of mirrored Solidspace houses was designed, which have been shortlisted for the 2014 New London Awards and Brick Awards. The houses are laid out in a butterfly plan, arranged over 7 half-levels, in which the symmetry lies within the axis of the party wall.

The trademark Solidspace DNA of ‘Eat Live Work’ was incorporated in the lower three levels of the interior space.

Perception of space is amplified with the metre-wide void between living and dining spaces, which allows for both long internal views and privacy. The double order arches is a reflection of the railway arch and perforated concrete coping stones follow the gable to articulate traditional bargeboard detailing. The bedrooms occupy the remaining floors of the apartment and are topped with private roof terraces.

About the developer

Solidspace is an independent developer founded by architect Roger Zogolovitch that produces bespoke, site-specific, and meticulously designed projects. Working on small backland sites, Solidspace unlocks the potential of these lands, many of which others overlook, to create homes that is customised for the inhabitants yet embracing their locale.

All of their developments are driven by light, volume and character, which is why it employs the unique Solidspace DNA, which is their trademark design. The Solidspace concept allows space for living, eating and sleeping over an open series of half levels. It was designed to make full use of both volume and light, which in turn, produces spacious, atmospheric homes that are flooded with natural light by taking out unnecessary walls. By employing half levels, the stairs double up as corridors, creating a double-height void.

Solidspace believes that it is small and medium-sized developments that will make a difference to cities today. They are campaigning for the recognition of independent developments where architects, self-builders and small developers should be given the opportunity and freedom to design creatively.
