Weston Street SE1

Architect: AHMM
Developer: Solidspace
About the Development

The Weston street scheme is the pinnacle of 10 years worth of design evolution. It was designed by Stirling Prize winning architect Simon Allford (director of AHMM) and developed by multi-award winning developer Solidspace. Influenced by its neighbouring buildings, the scheme has a modern and minimalist aesthetics and draws inspiration from the surrounding historic warehouses with its brick finish.

The 8 tessellating Solidspace apartments face south over the neighbouring park and conservation area. Each apartment is meticulously designed with high quality finishes which includes oak parquet flooring, exposed marked concrete.

It also features bedrooms laid out over half levels and the Solidspace trademark which includes double height spaces.

About the developer

Solidspace is an independent developer, founded by architect Roger Zogolovitch, that produces bespoke, site-specific and meticulously designed projects. Working on small backland sites, Solidspace unlocks the potential of these lands, many of which are overlooked, to create homes that are customised for the inhabitants yet embrace their locale.

All of their developments are driven by light, volume and character, which is why it employs the unique Solidspace DNA, which is their trademark design. The Solidspace concept allows space for living, eating and sleeping over an open series of half levels. It was designed to make full use of both volume and light, which in turn, produces spacious, atmospheric homes that are flooded with natural light by taking out unnecessary walls. By employing half levels, the stairs double up as corridors, creating a double-height void.

Solidspace believes that it is small and medium-sized developments that will make a difference to cities today. They are campaigning for the recognition of independent developments where architects, self-builders and small developers should be given the opportunity and freedom to design creatively.

About the Architect

As the director of Allford Hall Monaghan Morris (AHMM), Simon Allford explores the potential of architecture to offer aesthetics, in addition to being functional, to clients. Simon Allford describes the company’s approach as practical and pragmatic. Innovation at the firm is as much about being smart and doing things better as it is about finding new things to do.

In addition to his role as a director at AHMM, Simon is Chairman of the Architecture Foundation, a trustee of the Architecture Association Foundation, a visiting professor at The Bartlett and GSD Harvard. He was recently Vice President for Education at RIBA and a Chair of Design Review at CABE.

Planning

With the array of practicality studies produced, and the planning and development consults provided by AZ Urban Studio, it was then decided by the client that part of the estate should be redeveloped to fabricate a high density mixed use scheme. This is done to utilise the potential of the highly accessible location.

Planning permission was approved by the London Borough of Southwark in 2014 and construction started in June 2015. With the creative design of AHMM architects that responds to the sensitive context of the site by presenting a reinterpretation of the traditional warehouse, AZ Urban Studio led the way for the preparation and submission of a full planning application. As a result, the redevelopment of the building now responds to the site by acting as an interface between the Bermondsey Street conservation area and the more functional townscape.
