Austin Vernon & Partners

Description

Austin Vernon & Partners is a flourishing commercial venture that was set up when Russell Vernon and his uncle, Frederick Austin Vernon, became practice partners in 1948. At that time, Frederick Austin Vernon was the architect and the surveyor of the Dulwich Estate. Austin Vernon & Partners had a traditional way of doing things architecturally initially but over the years, Russell, who was a graduate of the Regent Street Polytechnic, remodelled it into a modern studio that has delivered high quality 1950s and 1960s housing across various locations in the UK. With his past experience working for his great uncle, George Vernon, he led the team to deliver some of the practice’s noteworthy projects include the headquarters of Otis Elevators, restoration of the Dulwich Picture Gallery, training centre and church for the Church Army and an office for Lufthansa. The most unforgettable and prominent project, however, would be the Dulwich Estate, which was created for over 2,000 homes for many families. It was a marvellous unity between built and nature as the architecture is sensitive to the topography of the site and the position and dimension of the trees around it.
